About The Moreton Bay Fig Tree

The Moreton Bay Fig Tree, also known as just the fig tree in Balboa Park (you’ll know the one), was planted in 1915 and is one of the biggest fig trees in the world. Which makes it probably within reach of one of the largest single unit living organisms in the world. At 125 feet wide and 80 feet tall, the Moreton Bay Fig Tree in Balboa Park is a humbling display of natural beauty and strength.

The tree sits outside of the Natural History Museum amidst a grassy lawn where you can have a picnic, play catch, or just soak up the sun. There is also a patio under the tree where you can sit on a bench and recline in the tree’s shade. Slow your day down and move at a tree’s pace for a while. And think about how majestic you won’t look when you are one hundred and ten years old.

Behind The Counter

The Moreton Bay Fig Tree was planted in 1915, as was the rest of Balboa Park. The tree was surrounded by its current fence in the 90s as the roots were being trampled and the tree began to die. It has since made a full recovery and is as beautiful as ever. We interviewed the tree and it told us it is very happy with its current situation.
