About Mariposa Ice Cream

Mariposa Homemade Ice Cream is a small locally owned ice cream shop in Normal Heights that serves the best ice cream you can get in the neighborhood (and possibly all of San Diego). It is a tiny little underrated shop that makes ice cream the old school way – the owner learned his technique growing up on a dairy farm and they stick to old school ice cream making principals. The ice cream at Mariposa is rich, creamy, thick and really really really good. It’s a great place to stop by for a scoop if you are in the neighborhood and want to skip the corporate ice cream conglomerates of modern times. Just note that they are closed Monday Tuesday and Wednesday.

Behind The Counter

Mariposa Ice Cream was founded by Dick Van Ransom who learned ice cream making on a hand crank ice cream machine on a Dutch dairy farm in upstate New York. He moved to San Diego in 2000 and opened the ice cream shop that year. His son and wife still own Mariposa and stick to his principals of the craft.
