San Diego is a surprisingly good pizza town and the best pizza spots in San Diego are spread across the city, as they should be. Most neighborhoods in SD have a decent pizzeria to call their own. To us, there is no ranking of “the best pizza” because there are so many variations and everyone has their own favorite. There is New York style slices, Detroit style pizzas, Chicago deep dish, fancy Neapolitan pies, Dominos thin crust, Dominos stuffed crust, Pizza Hut personal pan, etcetera. So this is just a list of the best pizza joints in the city, in no particular order.
And just remember, pizza is like sex – even when it’s bad it is usually pretty good.
Unless it makes you sick.
THE PIZZA PLACES
Pizzeria Luigi
Pizzeria Luigi serves New York style pies and slices and does them exceptionally well. Started by an Italian emigrant to the Golden Hill neighborhood of San Diego, Pizzeria Luigi now has a few locations around San Diego, all of which serve a wide range of beers and have plenty of space to sit and eat. They also deliver.
Bronx Pizza Hillcrest
Bronx Pizza feels like a neighborhood pizza joint plucked straight from the streets of New York. It is a small walk-in spot on a busy street in the middle of Hillcrest that serves pies and slices and has exactly zero frills. The ordering is at the counter and you’ll have to shout over a few people, as it should be. The staff is fast, so be ready with your order or they’ll move on, as it should be. The place is cash only with no delivery, as it should be. And, oh yea, the pizza is delicious, as it should be.
Tribute Pizza
The best pizza in North Park is served at Tribute Pizza. A restaurant that pays tribute to all the famous pizzas in the world and does it well. The restaurant itself is a great space for a dinner out and slightly more upscale than the others mentioned, serving craft cocktails and a larger menu of alternatives to pizza.
TNT Pizza
Opened in 2021 TNT Pizza started as a pizza delivery service and is now its own storefront. They do New York, Detroit, “Grandma” (flatbread style), and “Tavern” style (not sure). Their Detroit-style pizza is the best of its kind in San Diego and the rest of what they do is delicious too. TNT is fast becoming one of the best pizza spots on San Diego.
Regents Pizzeria
Located in the corner of a random shopping mall in University City, Regents Pizzeria probably slides under most people’s radar. If you are not in the delivery radius consider yourself unlucky because Regents makes the best pizza in San Diego.
The Friendly – San Diego
The Friendly is a casual pizza, burger, and beer joint that looks like the owners don’t care much about quality, until your try their food, and then you realize that the whole vibe, the whole nostalgic effort of the place, is on purpose and is executed brilliantly. It is literally the opposite of restaurants who spend all of their time on the decorations and ambience only to let the food quality come in underwhelming. The food at The Friendly is top notch. And to many people in the know, who care about these things, The Friendly serves the best burger in San Diego.
Village Pizzeria In Coronado
We can safely say that Village Pizzeria is the best pizza spot on Coronado because Village Pizzeria is the only pizza spot on Coronado. It is not the only place that makes pizza (there’s a couple Italian restaurants too), but it is the only true pizza spot on Coronado. Other than Dominos. Which is also great. But the good news is Village Pizzeria also makes damn good pizza. As well as great wings, garlic knots, and calzones. The pizza is New York style which means it is the style we all know and love. They serve whole pies or by the slice. They also serve good beer here, as any respectable pizza joint should. (Other than Dominos. Which, again, great place).
Blind Lady Ale House
At Blind Lady they do everything well – food, vibe, service, community involvement. They are like the cool kids with good taste who you want to be friends with. They are like if Keanu Reeves became the physical embodiment of a restaurant. Located on Adams Ave in the heart of Normal Heights, a diverse and casually cool neighborhood nestled between the 805 and the 15, Blind Lady Ale House is a proper ode to its location. It is charming without trying hard to be, it is high quality without being pretentious, it is eclectic but not in a self aware way.
Pizza Port Solana Beach
Pizza Port is probably more well known for their beer (they are one of the early craft breweries of San Diego), but they did indeed start as a pizza shop too. And a damn good one at that. Their original location in Solana Beach is exactly what a local pizza shop should be – family-friendly, bustling and casual, filled with kids and teenagers and couples, all mingling at picnic tables and downing fresh out of the oven pies alongside freshly brewed beers (not the kids and teenagers, hopefully). There are arcade games in the back and TVs lining the wall with whatever sport you can think of playing. This place is the quintessential California pizza joint and it is always worth a visit.
