Mission Valley is a huge natural valley running through the middle of San Diego which used to be the path of the San Diego River before California diverted every river they had away from their natural flow. Mission Valley today is well urbanized with numerous housing developments and communities existing alongside the mall-shopping heart of San Diego and highway 8 – the main artery leading east out of the city.
