About Tappers Mini Golf At The Loma Club

Tappers, located in Liberty Station at The Loma Club, has our favorite miniature golf in San Diego. The Loma Club is located at the northern end of Liberty Station and is a combination of a par three golf course, a bar that serves food, two miniature golf courses, and a large patio/courtyard with a stage where there is often live music. If this sounds like an oddly eclectic mix of things to you, you’re not wrong, but once you get there you will realize that all it just kind of works. The Loma Club has a very Caddy Shack/golf party kind of vibe to it.

The miniature golf is called Tappers and you can play one of two 9 hole courses – either the Gator Course or the Gopher Course. The place where you pay serves beer and snacks or you can go to the golf bar inside for more options.

At The Loma Club you will find lots of post-golf groups, pre-golf groups, mini-golf groups, or just local neighborhood families sitting on the patio having a hotdog and a beer, watching the live band. This is probably the only golf course in the world that encourages loud noise. Right next door is the restaurant Dirty Birds which serves some of the best wings in San Diego, if you need something different than what the clubhouse offers for food.

Behind The Counter

Liberty Station is an old naval base, formerly called the Naval Training Station (NTC), that shut down in 1997 and was bought by the City of San Diego in 2000. Since then, the city has worked tirelessly to make Liberty Station a community-focused sanctuary of locally-owned businesses, local art studios, and entertainment venues. It is one of the best places to visit in San Diego for restaurants, shopping, art, events, and community.

The Loma Club has its own unique history having been a golf course of some form since the 1910s. Just prior to its renovation in 2006, The Loma Club was known as Sail Ho, a 9-hole Naval golf course known more as a danger zone of cross-pinged balls that required a helmet to play safely. During its heyday as a military course a certain Sam Snead served as the course’s Head Golf Professional. Local San Diegan Phil Mickelson is reported to have played tournaments on this historic course. The name Loma Club comes from this course’s original founding as the Point Loma Golf Club. It is a benefit for all San Diego that this historic place was not replaced by condos or a Home Depot, but retains its old historic charm. Loma Club is currently owned by Adam Goff, who also owns The Oaks in Ramona.
