About The Ould Sod

The Ould Sod is a borderline dive bar in Normal Heights that has been a staple of that neighborhood for decades. The bar itself has been around for almost one hundred years, serving patrons of the historic neighborhood. The Ould Sod has its small historic main bar in the front – great for an Irish beer and chatting with fellow barstool patrons (it feels like a place you could still get away with smoking a cigarette inside) – and a sprawling back patio with pub games – ping pong, foosball, darts. Probably the best thing to do here, though, is karaoke. They take their karaoke seriously at this bar – it runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights (sometimes it feels like every night) and it becomes the main attraction. So get a Smithwicks, get a booth seat in the front bar, and listen to people belt out the words to the songs you never knew and still won’t after hearing them.

The Ould Sod is one of the best dive bars in San Diego in our opinion.

Best Parts

  • Historic old world bar charm in the front
  • New large modern patio in the back
  • Not so much cocktails as well drinks

Behind The Counter

The Ould Sod is owned by three local Irish Americans (one guys name is Mick, another’s last name is Stout) who champion everything Irish in the city – Irish sports, Irish music, Irish culture. They are heavily involved in the local community, hosting fundraisers often, and they play host to several local sports clubs and watching groups.
