Maybe it’s the summer and you didn’t set up camp. Maybe it’s Veteran’s Day. Maybe it is one of those random non-instructional days for San Diego Unified. And then maybe dad had too much to drink last night while watching the Padres. Or mom stayed out a little bit too late with her friends. And you’re just exhausted and you can’t fathom the whole production of going to the zoo, or Legoland, or setting up a playdate and making small talk with your daughter’s friends awkward mom.
Is this you? Or similar? Here are some suggestions for you:
Go See A Movie At The Lot
The Lot in Liberty Station (or La Jolla) is a more upscale movie theater, though it is not all that much more expensive than your typical AMC joint. The great thing about The Lot, besides that they serve food and alcohol to your seat, is they have big comfy seats that recline so that you can nod off while your child watches the newest Sonic movie. Two seats combine so you guys can snuggle up together. Bring a blanket and enjoy.
Drop Your Child At G3 Kids And Go Fall Asleep Under A Tree
G3 Kids at Liberty Station (right by The Lot!) is a kids jungle gym play place that has options to drop your kid for an hour or two while you “go run errands”. Kids love G3 and the instructors and staff there are very responsible and kid friendly. It’s a great option for letting your kids get out some energy and you then have all of Liberty Station at your leisure. Go shopping, go to the grocery store, take a nap on a bench, take a nap under a tree or in the middle of a grassy field, get a beer at the food hall.
Go To South Park
The neighborhood of South Park is, in general, a very kid friendly place. It is also hangover friendly – it is shady, calm, walkable, tree lined, and low key. Every establishment in South Park has many kids hanging out with their parents – The Rose Wine Bar patio, Harland Brewery, and of course Station Tavern. Walk around for a bit – buy some ice cream at Stella Jeans, get a beer at Harland, buy a puzzle at Target, or just push your children around in a cart while you sweat out the hangover.
Go To The Aquarium
You might think the aquarium is overwhelming, like the zoo, but it is not. Go on a weekday midday and the Birch Aquarium is actually quite a pleasant experience. It is dark inside and cool. Parking is usually easy. The various floating sea creatures are majestic and calming. Go to the seahorse tank and look them in the eyes. See them judge you for your decisions as they bob up and down. But don’t take any guff from those equine bastards – they don’t know your life.
All of this will help relax you and make you forget that all of your burps taste like tequila and you wish they didn’t. Also, unlike the zoo, the Birch Aquarium is not an easy place to lose your child if you happen to zone out for a second.
