The North Park neighborhood in San Diego is a bustling urban hub that in many ways has become the center of the city’s culinary and bar scene. Outside of downtown, there are no other neighborhoods in the city with more bars, restaurants, stores, coffee shops, breweries, and venues.
North Park is one of the best neighborhoods in the city for night life, catering to all ages, from the young 20-something post-college grads to families with young kids to retirees. It has a few of the best breweries in the city, several of the best restaurants in the city, The Observatory (a great concert venue that attracts talent from around the world), the newly renovated Lafayette Hotel, and a bustling array of locally owned boutique stores, all within walking distance of each other. Every Thursday, North Park hosts a small farmers market on North Park Way and an annual music fest in June.
North Park was first developed in the early 1900s with its commercial heart centered at 30th and University. It was one of the first urban developments as the city of San Diego expanded out from the areas surrounding Balboa Park along streetcar lines (why don’t we still have those?). Its huge residential areas are intermixed with commercial districts, making it highly walkable (and highly desirable, hence the high housing costs). For the architecture nerds out there, North Park hosts some of the prettiest examples of Craftsman Bungalows in the city, as well as Spanish Colonial and Mission Revival styles. The neighborhood of North Park expands up to Adams Ave and down to Switzer Canyon and is bordered on east and west by the 805 and Florida Ave respectively.
North Park exemplifies some of the best local craft that San Diego has to offer – from food to wine to shops to the arts. Below is our guide to the best parts of the neighborhood.

Restaurants in North Park
As mentioned, North Park has one of the best restaurant scenes in San Diego. There are several Michelin-recognized places perfect for a date night or a celebratory night out. North Park also has some of the best casual dining in the city, from Mexican food to delis to pizza and burger joints.
Mabel’s Gone Fishing
Mabel’s Gone Fishing is a Spanish influenced restaurant in the heart of North Park that seems to get everything just about right. The space is cozy but not cramped. The cocktails are perfectly well balanced. The food is beautifully crafted without being pretentious and unapproachable. And the service is knowledgeable without being, well… pretentious and unapproachable. Mabel’s is a great neighborhood spot for North Park and a destination restaurant in San Diego itself.
Pete’s Seafood and Sandwiches
Pete’s Seafood and Sandwiches is a casual restaurant in North Park that serves Boston-style seafood (think fried clams, fried oysters, lobster rolls), as well as a few well made deli sandwich items (think chicken parm, buffalo chicken, Italian sub). Pete’s is as authentically Boston as it gets – Pete himself is from the Boston area and you can tell from his accent when he takes your order. This place is great for a nostalgic taste of New England for all those transplants living in San Diego. They have indoor and outdoor seating, a bar showing Boston sports behind the counter, and some of the friendliest service around. Pete’s Seafood is a gem of a spot in North Park.
The Taco Stand
The Taco Stand is a casual counter service chain that started in San Diego serving Tijuana-style tacos, as well as burritos, quesadillas, and specials. The Taco Stand is always lively and packed with people, good for a casual bite and a beer. They are no longer as local as they used to be – they quickly franchised to many spots all over SoCal and the country at large.
Nomad Donuts
Nomad Donuts is a bagel sandwich shop in North Park that makes some of the most innovative sandwiches in San Diego. The sheer amount of ingredients they have on hand to make their sandwich toppings boggles the mind. Nomad Donuts is great for well crafted sandwiches (on bagels) that you won’t find at your typical bacon egg and cheese bagel store. Though they have a good bacon egg and cheese too. They have a good amount of seating inside and on the patio to dine in. Lines get long on weekends.
Fortunate Son North Park
Fortunate Son is a Chinese restaurant in North Park that serves classic Chinese food in a modern style. Think favorites like kung pao chicken, lo mein noodles, and savory wanton soup. The setting inside Fortunate Son is intimate and ornate, and they have a solid takeout operation running from the window near their patio.
Between Us
A true source-to-table restaurant, Between Us is like the elevated “gastro-pub” of breakfast places. Located in North Park, food from local farmers, roasters, and brewers is used to create unique breakfast dishes and cafe beverages inspired by Japanese cuisine and recipes. Inside gives off a cozy and warm community vibe (instead of instagram gimmicks). It’s a refreshing brunch spot to have, truly focused on food and experience.
Tribute Pizza
The best pizza in North Park is served at Tribute Pizza. A restaurant that pays tribute to all the famous pizzas in the world and does it well. The restaurant itself is a great space for a dinner out and slightly more upscale than the others mentioned, serving craft cocktails and a larger menu of alternatives to pizza.
Pizzeria Luigi
Pizzeria Luigi serves New York style pies and slices and does them exceptionally well. Started by an Italian emigrant to the Golden Hill neighborhood of San Diego, Pizzeria Luigi now has a few locations around San Diego, all of which serve a wide range of beers and have plenty of space to sit and eat. They also deliver.
Cori Pastificio Trattoria In North Park
Few Italian restaurants hold a candle to Cori in North Park, which is why they deserve your appetite. Chef Accursio pours his heart into each dish, including homemade focaccia bread with crispy capers and olives, pappardelle with wild boar sugo, or ditalini pasta infused with squid ink. It’s classic, contemporary, and all delicious. Fine wine and cocktails, excellent service, and beautiful furniture with vibrant colors make it an excellent place for date night or to impress your partner’s parents.
The Friendly – San Diego
The Friendly is a casual pizza, burger, and beer joint that looks like the owners don’t care much about quality, until your try their food, and then you realize that the whole vibe, the whole nostalgic effort of the place, is on purpose and is executed brilliantly. It is literally the opposite of restaurants who spend all of their time on the decorations and ambience only to let the food quality come in underwhelming. The food at The Friendly is top notch. And to many people in the know, who care about these things, The Friendly serves the best burger in San Diego.
The Mission Cafe – North Park
The Mission Cafe in North Park offers great food, exceptional service, and a dedication to their community and local artists. Hard not to like that. They serve creative breakfast options like lemon curd pancakes, a mixed mushroom frittata, and sweet corn and chili tamales, and homemade cinnamon bread French toast. They also have lighter dishes like granola, fresh fruit, and avocado toast. However, our favorite is their famous crispy rosemary potatoes – crispy, salty, and infused with a buttery rosemary flavor that can stand as a meal on its own. Once tasted it will be hard to share, but we know you can do it. Inside, The Mission Cafe is a homey place, and feels more like a cozy cafe from the 90’s with local artwork on the walls for sale. You’ll find plenty of seating, open windows, and a happy vibe throughout.
Bars and Breweries in North Park
North Park hosts dozens of bars, ranging from dives to high end cocktail lounges. It is also home to some of the best breweries in the city.
TapRoom Beer Co
Tap Room Beer Co. is one of the earliest craft breweries with a taproom in North Park. It’s a great place to meet friends, watch a game, or just indulge in serious craft beer. It does get busy, but this is a huge space so you’ll find plenty of seating inside and out, or at their bar. Come hungry (and maybe in a carshare) because they have a delightful food menu, and you’ll want more than just one tasty brew.
Bottlecraft
Bottlecraft is a boutique beer store with three locations in San Diego – Little Italy, Liberty Station, and North Park. Each location is a bar that serves draft beers you probably won’t find anywhere else, in addition to their incredible can selection. The staff is friendly and very, very knowledgeable about beer. Treat it like a wine store – tell them what you like and let them make some suggestions.
Live Wire North Park
Live Wire is an institution on El Cajon Boulevard – opened by a couple of San Diego locals in 1992 (making it probably the oldest bar in Southern California), Live Wire looks like a dive bar, but their draft list is always amazing and they are much friendlier and livelier than a true dive. You might miss it walking by and that would be a shame because it is a small, dark, cozy, and loud good time. Play music at the jukebox or come for a live show on the weekends. This is one of the best beer bars in San Diego.
Happy Medium
Happy Medium in North Park is part cocktail bar, part lunch spot. Outdoorsy and breezy – they have cocktails called Porch Pounders that are a bit too easy down the hatch. It’s a solid go to for lunch and a drink or just post up at the bar and watch a Padres game.
Whiskers And Wine
Located in North Park, Whiskers and Wine bar offers the purrfect combination of wine and cats. And if you’re hungry for human food a full menu is available. What sets this cafe apart is their rooftop catio (their clever words, not ours) – you get to sit outside and the cats get to feel the fresh breeze and wild urban smells and chirp at all the birds. It’s a great time.
Swan Bar In North Park
Swan Bar in North Park is a true hidden gem. It is a moody cocktail bar with some of the friendliest bartenders around. It has a tiny menu, but serves low key one of the best burgers in San Diego. In fact, Swan Bar is low key in every aspect – it even sits hidden behind a wood paneled wall with only a small neon sign outside to guide the way in.
Polite Provisions
Polite Provisions in North Park is a decorative and ornate cocktail bar that has tasteful flourishes everywhere you look – including in the cocktails themselves. The bar feels like a throwback to the Art Noveau days of the early 1900s with their intricate level of detail in everything from the decor to the menu to the drinks themselves.
Pure Project North Park
Pure Project brews a wide range of beers, but are probably best known for what they call their Murky IPAs, similar to hazy IPAs… but murkier. Their North Park Taproom on El Cajon Boulevard has a cozy, hidden courtyard with indoor/outdoor seating that offers a nice reprieve from the bustling street outside. They typically have a food vendor on site, often with wood fired pizza and wings. Come into this oasis and enjoy some cold beers on a hot day.
North Park Beer Company
North Park Beer Company’s original location, on University Ave in North Park, is a huge beer hall with a large downstairs, as well as an upstairs area that has arcade games, shuffleboard, and is often uninhabited enough during the weekdays to bring a child or two without disturbing anyone. They have a restaurant inside – Mastiff North Park – that serves brats and other bar food. This is the perfect location for large groups as the place is massive and open.
Barley And Sword Brewing Company
Barley & Sword Brewing Company is the closest you can get to an old world brewpub without an expensive plane ticket. At Barley & Sword they specialize in British, German, and Czech beers (Kolsch, Irish Red Ale, Scottish Ale, Pilsner, ESB) and they do them damn well. So if you are sick of IPAs and in the mood for a bitter English or a crisp pilsner or a sour goze this your place. They do keep an IPA on tap, but this is for profiling purposes and that is not what you should be drinking here.
The Pool At Lafayette Hotel
The pool at the Lafayette Hotel is a scene, that’s for sure. The hotel itself was completely remodeled in 2023 and part of their focus was on bringing the outdoor pool and accompanying cocktail bar back to its SoCal 1940s Hollywood heyday when famous actors came to this hotel to drink cocktails and have affairs in private. There is a distinctly retro and elegant vibe to the pool and poolside bar, with cabanas, decorative lounge chairs, and occasional live music. Despite all the opulence, this place is still family-friendly and there are always a few kids playing about.
Fall Brewing Company
Fall Brewing Company is what happens when punk music and brewing collide, and it totally rocks. Not beholden to one style, Fall Brewing is known for their extensive variety of brews from brown ales, murky IPA’s, crispy pale ales, easy-going lagers, and specialty brews like sangria sours and spiked seltzers. They have tasting rooms in Miramar (the HQ), North Park, and South Park, each offering a visual spectacle with vintage decor, handmade furniture, and a variety of art promoting a punk rock attitude. They are kid friendly, and dog friendly.

Holsem Coffee is a high quality coffee shop.

Subterranean Coffee is a cozy cafe in North Park that feels like a throwback to old college coffee shops with their eclectic seating (think sofas, comfy chairs, tables of varying heights and sizes, no two pieces of furniture the same), hipster baristas playing solid hipster music (probably on vinyl), a wide assortment of food, and of course, good coffee.
Muri Cafe
Muri Coffee and Cake is an oasis in a sea of traditional cafes in San Diego. With authentic Kurdish coffee, traditional drinks like qezwan (made with the fruits from turpentine trees), fresh teas, and delicious homemade cakes. The ambiance creates a sense of nostalgia for world travel, with beautiful decorations creating a cozy and calm feeling that you rarely find at other cafes in San Diego. Created by two doctoral students at UCSD who wanted to deepen their connection and impact to their community, Muri Cafe is a unique coffee spot that deserves a visit to shake up your morning routine.
