A Neighborhood Guide to South Park

The South Park neighborhood in San Diego is a self-contained quaint, walkable, lovely section of the city that is low key one of the best places to visit. South Park packs local stores, high quality restaurants, bustling bars, and natural beauty into a tight space, just east of Balboa Park.

Centered on Fern Street, South Park, like its neighboring and larger North Park, was one of the first streetcar suburbs of San Diego, where families could buy a Crafstman Bungalow and get some breathing room away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Over the decades, it has evolved into one of the most sought after places to live in the city, which contributes to its quite high cost of living now. But the neighborhood remains locally minded, community focused, and very welcoming to all comers.

South Park has two commercial hubs that are technically within walking distance of each other, but maybe just out of range for comfort – one is at Juniper and Fern St stretching south, and the other is around Beech and 30th St. Both areas are a lovely mix of calm tree lined streets with delicious local restaurants and bars with local mom and pop shopping alongside.

Restaurants in South Park

South Park is not overloaded with restaurants, but the few it has are high quality and fit most of your needs – from kid friendly restaurants to fancy date night spots to low key places in between.

Station Tavern

Station Tavern in South Park is a casual outdoor restaurant on the main strip that serves a small menu of decent bar food, but the highlight of Station Tavern is how kid friendly this place is. It seems like it was designed with kids in mind – it is a big open space with first come first serve picnic tables surrounded by basically a gravel sandbox where kids congregate and play with the toys they brought or the toys on offer from Station. Any place that is kid friendly is also dog friendly by the same standards – casual and open.

The Rose Wine Bar – South Park

The Rose Wine Bar in South Park is a natural wine bar and a charming restaurant that sits on a charming street in a charming neighborhood in a charming city. They serve brunch, lunch, and dinner with an eclectic cuisine style – leaning Spanish tapas with some French and Mexican influences. The Rose serves mostly natural wines that are creative and diverse and delicious, so don’t be shy to enlist the servers for help deciding what to drink. Their cocktails are delicious as well. In short, they do it all well.

Il Posto South Park

Located on the cozy, tree-lined streets of South Park, Il Posto offers a smaller, more intimate setting. We often sit at their bar for a little more socialization with the friendly staff (and prime seats to watch videos of the Italian country-side on their television), or you can take a seat at one of their dining tables. On their menu is a great selection of fine Italian food including fresh-made pastas, seafood dishes, and salads. We highly recommend starting with their burrata e prosciutto (because why wouldn’t you). For a main course, the linguine alla vongole is as fresh and light as you should expect from a white white clam pasta, or you can try their incredible cioppino, which is a galaxy of seafood swimming in a rich tomato broth, all to be soaked up with some crispy grilled bread.

Bars and Breweries in South Park

South Park has some of the best bars in the city packed into its small walkable area – from a galactic tiki bar to a dive-y live music venue to elevated wine bars and low key breweries. You’ll find just about anything.

Fall Brewing Company

Fall Brewing Company is what happens when punk music and brewing collide, and it totally rocks. Not beholden to one style, Fall Brewing is known for their extensive variety of brews from brown ales, murky IPA’s, crispy pale ales, easy-going lagers, and specialty brews like sangria sours and spiked seltzers. They have tasting rooms in Miramar (the HQ), North Park, and South Park, each offering a visual spectacle with vintage decor, handmade furniture, and a variety of art promoting a punk rock attitude. They are kid friendly, and dog friendly.

Mothership

Mothership is one of the best tiki bars in San Diego because you don’t even know it is a tiki bar. You might even call it a sneaky bar. Sniki bar. Anyway. Mothership, located in South Park, is a space-themed bar and restaurant that truly goes all out with the experience.

Harland Brewery South Park

Beer is implied in the name, but Harland is not just one of the best breweries in San Diego, it is also one of the best cafes in San Diego. Harland has three other tasting rooms, but the cafe experience is currently only available at their South Park location. Open and spacious with lots of natural light, you can get comfy at their massive U bar, one of their many tabletops, or out on their patio. Being on a quaint street corner makes it extra conducive for an early morning work session or a crispy boy with friends in the afternoon. The place is always busy, but not packed. And the South Park Harland location is family friendly, dog friendly, finch friendly, and just plain friendly.

Bock South Park

Bock Bar in South Park is a cozy European-style pub that serves old-world style beers and delicious German food in a dimly lit, all wood space. With over 30+ beers on tap, you can find all of your hard to pronounce favorites, like Dunkels, Hefeweizen, Schwarzbier, Doppelbocks, and Kölsches. They bring a great balance to the modern tappings of most breweries and restaurants in San Diego.

Whistle Stop Bar

Whistle Stop in South Park is a wild place. It’s a calm place, but the music they host is wild. They have booty basement dancing (there is not basement, it’s just out in the open). The last time we were there it was a woman singing operatic tonal vocals with a rushing star voyage projected behind her. Then there is a totally normal patio with beer and a food truck. It’s a wonderful spot. Whistle Stop is the place to go in South Park for a good time.

Best Coffee Shops in South Park

South Park has a few coffee shops scattered among its shops and restaurants for refueling or sitting down to study, meet a friend, or read a book on a peaceful morning.

Dark Horse Coffee Roasters – South Park

This small but might coffee shop is the perfect place for a quick stop that offers premium roasts and some tasty morning pastries and breakfast items. There few tables/seats to post at, but you’ll notice the vibe is flurry of activity from morning joggers, work commuters, tired adolescents, and afternoon espresso slammers. Having been around for over ten years, Dark Horse Coffee Roasters has large presence in San Diego, and they even have a location in Southside of Kaua’i.

Communal Coffee South Park

Communal Coffee definitely wins the award for the cutest coffee shop in San Diego, no matter which location you go to. Their spot in South Park, on Fern St, is a lovely open courtyard with picnic table seating and individual tables and benches, shaded by umbrellas, serving coffee and food out of an ivy-lined, white food truck that will make you feel like maybe you are in Paris or some country where McDonalds was never invented. This location has indoor seating inside their mini shop where they sell curated homewares that make you feel like your house will never be decorated to the aesthetic that you want. The coffee is good too. And the food. But Communal is a place you go for the SoCal vibes.

The Reverie Room

The Reverie Room is a resale shop in South Park. Come here to find vintage and used clothing, records, books, and rare small crafts like handmade belt buckles from the 70’s (just got one myself). They have quite a stock outside of what’s on display so don’t hesitate to ask if you’re looking for something particular. Have stuff to sell? They might be interested, so please do inquire.

Vinyl Junkies South Park

Vinyl Junkies is an incredible record store, as well-curated as any, by its owner, a former music executive named Eric Howarth. Head to the back, Diggers Den, where there are cheaper bins to dig through and see if you can turn up a gem.

Gold Leaf South Park

There is something pleasing about spending time in a boutique gift shop with a well-crafted selection of goods – like watching cream swirl into a cold brew coffee before it is fully mixed in. It’s just a nice feeling. Gold Leaf South Park feels like this. Gold Leaf is a cute boutique gift shop in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego offering up home goods, jewelry, assorted gift items, and kids clothing and toys. The items on offer are all hand picked by the owners and are stylish and attractive and the space is warm, welcoming, and friendly. If you’re shopping for Christmas, birthdays, Mothers Day, or whatever other holiday is coming up – shop local and head to Gold Leaf.

San Diego City Canyons

You don’t have to leave the city to find great hiking in San Diego because spread throughout the city itself is a network of beautiful canyons filled with trails, trees, creeks, and wildlife habitats. San Diego’s canyons offer a chance to explore a natural, undeveloped landscape right in your own backyard. There are nearly 3,200 acres of open space canyons within the city. Some are more well-maintained than others, but most are accessible for anyone to do a light hike, trail running, and even mountain biking on certain trails. Open all year round and good to explore any time, we recommend the winter and spring months when the rain brings a lush, green landscape with fresh new foliage and beautiful wildflowers. The canyons are critical habitat for many of the amazing species in San Diego including great horned owls, great blue herons, rattlesnakes, hawks, parrots (yes, red Amazon parrots), humming birds, frogs, lizards, coyotes, and rabbits. If you’re really lucky, you might even see a squirrel.

The Book Catapult

The Book Catapult is an independently-owned book store in South Park with a well-curated selection and helpful staff. Bookstores are a lost beauty in this world and it is always nice to peruse titles in a place that knows what they are doing. The Book Catapult has a section on local San Diego history and many sections dedicated to nonfiction books about the natural world. They have a large kids section in the back with tables to sit and read the books before purchasing.
